Aloha Friends,

As you will realize after reading this newsletter, it has been an exciting year for Ka ‘Ohana O Kaluapapa, bringing more families back to their Kalaupapa ancestors. Because of our additional research over the past several months, we have expanded our database of names of those sent to Kalaupapa from 5,600 to more than 7,000. We are now contacting families we were not able to help in previous years to see if our new information includes the names of their kupuna. If you are still waiting to learn about your Kalaupapa kupuna, we hope we can provide you with some answers in the near future. Mahalo for your patience.

This additional research was made possible by the support of our individual donors as well as from grants by the Atherton Family Foundation and the Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation. We also thank the Department of Hawaiian Homelands for its continued support in planning for The Kalaupapa Memorial.

Beginning in January, the ‘Ohana intends to revise and improve our website – www.kalaupapaohana.org. We hope to make the website more dynamic and current with news, updates and other features. Let us know any of your ideas to make our website a place that you would visit more often.

We hope that the year 2011 will focus on The Kalaupapa Memorial. Once the federal compliance processes have been completed, we will begin the design phase. The design competition will be open to anyone interested in submitting a proposal. We will also begin our fund-raising campaign. For more on the Kalaupapa Memorial, see Page 4.
May your Christmas be blessed with the love of family and friends and the New Year filled with good health and happiness.

— Clarence “Boogie” Kahilihiwa, President, Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa

Are you looking for an ancestor at Kalaupapa?
The ‘Ohana wants to hear from you so we can help. Hopefully, we can provide information that should get you on the path to finding any ancestors you might have had at Kalaupapa. The ‘Ohana believes that the descendents of Kalaupapa will eventually become one of our organization’s greatest strengths.
Please contact us at info@kalaupapaohana.org and let us help you bring home your Kalaupapa ancestors. They are not lost. . . they are waiting for you.
